Wild Horses [ep]

The record was co-written and produced with songwriter and producer, Shane Alexander. It's intended to sound and feel alive and organic, like those recordings of the early 70s singer-songwriters, whose collaborations and cross over projects would help blend and shape new sounds and move us in the direction of modern songwriting.
Recorded mostly in Buddhaland Studios in Thousand Oaks, CA across two days, with some added support in studios in Ojai, CA and Nashville, TN. The recording features elite Los Angeles and Nashville based musicians - Deron Johnson on keys, a frequent partner on Smith's other records, Rob Humphreys on drums, Taras Prodaniuk on Bass, Jesse Siebenberg featured on Weissenborn and Hammond organ, Roy Agee on Trombone. Of course, you can't forget about JCS as the lead and only vocal, on guitars, and Shane Alexander plays some support electric and other guitars as well as some synth.
What People Are Saying
“‘Barkeep’ is a truly fabulous folk production that gets under your skin and puts the artist’s truly soulful and expressive voice in direct focus. With its emotional, yet narrative, vein and distinctive timbre, you’ll surely quickly recognize it among countless others.”
Berlin On Air
“Smith serves up another combination of sincere story-sharing and unassailable musicality. ‘Barkeep’ establishes a raw, organic atmosphere that draws listeners in close, from the first note. Textured, gritty, and full of soul, Smith’s voice is as old as a river carrying stories down the stream of time, creating a picture so vivid that it extends deep into the subterranean heart. There’s a cinematic sense to how he sings, not surprisingly, since his music has made long homes in film, television, and trailers. But on “Barkeep”, it sounds actively personal, like he’s treating us to a late-night confession after we’ve leaned in and asked for one.”
EARMILK
“Relying simply on notions of delicacy and fluidity, the vocalist’s lyrical interpretation gives the composition a quite appealing intimate quality due to its healthy dose of freshness.”
